On Thursday, Ohio Auditor Mary Taylor reported that two former Franklin County charter schools left $4
million in spending undocumented. The misspending was found in closeout financial reviews of The Harte School and Crossroads
Preparatory Academy.
According to the report, school officials failed to: record purchases and other spending;
document receipts of federal charter school start-up money; and maintain documentation on student attendance.
The
findings have been forwarded to the Attorney General for further investigation.
Both schools were declared
"unauditable" in January 2007 because of the lack of financial documentation. Two months after that, the schools
closed.
Recently, Auditor Taylor's office has listed five other charter schools in the same status.
Community school training seminars to provide financial guidance to charter school officials were established
in 2007. Since that time, the number of charter schools on the "unauditable" list has dropped.
