Sandusky County Quilt Block Story In November 1968, thirty-two retired teachers met
to sign the Sandusky County Retired Teachers Charter for the formation of a new organization. The purpose of the organization
was to improve the economic and social welfare of retired teachers and to provide opportunities for group community work and
interests. The group continues to meet four times a year for luncheon meetings with about one hundred members attending.
At
a State Teachers Retirement System meeting in 1979, it was discussed as to what should be done about the money that was left
over at the end of each year. It was Ruby Criger’s suggestion that when a surplus did exist, that a 13th check could
be sent to retirees in the month of December. Ms. Criger was chiefly responsible for organizing the SCRTA.
The Sandusky
Chapter continues to support the young people of our area high schools by providing annually two book scholarships to graduating
high school graduates who are pursuing degrees in education. From time to time, music groups present programs at our meetings.
Sometimes foreign exchange students speak to us. A student who was supported financially by SCRTA in his travel to Australia
told about his travels at one of our meetings.
Area superintendents are invited to meetings to inform the members about
what is happening in their schools systems. Donated items are brought to the meetings for distribution to a county homeless
shelter.
The members of SCRTA have given undivided attention and time to offices, to programs, and to projects. The
members are proud to be part of the Sandusky County Retired Teachers Association. We would also be proud to have you join
us.
